During each sedation visit, a physician anesthesiologist manages the child's anesthesia while the treating dentist gives full attention to the dental work. We complete the referred treatment at our center, then send the patient back to your practice for follow-up dental care and continued pediatric dentistry.
A pediatric dental sedation referral is appropriate once anxiety during dental procedures, age, special needs, or the amount of treatment exceeds what your dental office can manage with its available sedation options. Dental anxiety that prevents treatment. Some children remain unable to cooperate after time, reassurance, and behavioral management. Extensive dental treatment needs. Dividing eight fillings, four crowns, and two extractions across six dental appointments gives a child six chances to refuse care. The treating dentist performs the dental procedures. The two responsibilities remain separate for every case.
That model differs from chairside laughing gas or oral sedation administered by a pediatric dentist who is also completing the restorative work. Nitrous oxide and mild sedation with oral medications are forms of sedation often used during dental procedures for children with moderate dental anxiety. Many pediatric patients respond well to those methods. A child who needs deep sedation or general anesthesia requires a different setup: a physician trained in pediatric anesthesia manages the sedation while the dentist performs the dental treatment. With each dental professional responsible for one role, both can give their full attention to the child. At the start of the dental appointment in our Stonecrest office, the anesthesiologist reviews the child's medical history, medications, allergies, and fasting compliance. Parents complete the intake paperwork in advance, which shortens this check-in step.
The anesthesiologist begins sedation after the pre-op evaluation. Dental treatment starts once the child is sedated and stable. Our team routinely completes restorative care (fillings, crowns, stainless steel crowns), extractions, pulpotomy and pulpectomy, space maintainers, and sealants under sedation. Most referred pediatric patients arrive with enough treatment needs that completing the full plan in one dental visit is the reason for the referral.
Continuous patient monitoring remains with the anesthesiologist throughout every sedation procedure. During the case, the anesthesiologist has one responsibility: the comfort and safety of the child. After the dentist finishes the dental work, the anesthesia team supervises recovery on-site. A child is discharged only after meeting all recovery criteria. Parents leave with aftercare instructions and a direct office number for questions at home.
